The inspiration behind the Lotus Resort is rooted in the pressing need for sustainable urban expansion in China. As the country's urban population is projected to surge by millions by 2050, the strain on natural land resources is intensifying. The desert, often overlooked in urban planning, presents a viable solution to this challenge. The Lotus Resort is not just an oasis for the current generation, but a beacon of possibility for future desert-based urban development.
What sets the Lotus Resort apart is its unique blend of form and function. The lotus shape is not a mere aesthetic choice, but a strategic design for sand stabilization, sun-shading, wind-load bearing, and rainwater collection. The design also incorporates the traditional Chinese philosophy of 'Zhen', meaning the replica of the identical, with the form derived from simple rotations of squares, resulting in a series of triangles that enhance the visual appeal.
The realization of this design required innovative solutions to overcome the challenges of the desert environment. PLAT ASIA developed a structural system that could be fixed in fluid sands using steel panels, functioning like a boat floating in the desert. The lack of finish materials in the area led to the invention of a unique material made from sand, which can be reproduced locally when necessary.
The Lotus Resort is a testament to the power of passive design strategies in reducing carbon emissions. Instead of relying on high-tech equipment like photovoltaic panels and solar batteries, the design uses a membrane to reduce solar gain for the interior, significantly reducing carbon footprints and electricity costs. This approach makes the building less vulnerable than those heavily reliant on high-tech solutions.
Despite the challenges of its location, the Lotus Resort has been a resounding success. Completed in May 2016, it has been open to the public since then and has been honored with numerous awards, including the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018. This recognition is a testament to the design's remarkable blend of creativity, technical expertise, and innovation.
PLAT ASIA's Xiangshawan Desert Lotus Resort is a shining example of sustainable architecture's potential to transform neglected terrains into thriving urban spaces. It is a beacon of hope for the future of urban development, demonstrating that with innovative design and sustainable practices, even the harshest environments can bloom into life.
